Tale #47: Luigi & Luigi

This post best pairs with “I Don’t Want To” from All Shook Up (2005).

Halloween is already in full swing in Los Angeles. Kids in a variety of costumes are visiting Nights of the Jack and Haunt-o-Ween while adults risk heart palpitations at Halloween Horror Nights and Haunted Hayrides.

Halloween would fall right in the midst of rehearsals for our Fall Youth shows at VACT. The kids would be encouraged to dress in costume for the rehearsal that fell on or closest to the whimsical holiday.

During our Fall 2018 production of Legally Blonde Jr., we had themed rehearsals every Sunday including class colors day, USA day, neon day, sports day, and of course a Halloween day.

We were set to run the show in sequence on the rehearsal right before Halloween. For those of you that are fans of the movie, you’ll remember that the movie opens with Elle getting ready with her sorority sisters for her big date with Warner where she expects a proposal. The show starts with the song “Omigod You Guys” and then goes into the song “Serious”.

So on this Halloween-themed rehearsal day, both our young actress playing Elle and our young actor playing Warner came in costume dressed as: Luigi from Super Mario Bros.

The actors transitioned the set from the Sorority House to the Restaurant and all of the actors took their spots on stage. There at the center table, ready for the iconic break-up scene, an absurd sight: Luigi dining with Luigi.

Luigi taking himself out to dinner to break up with himself. Analyze that psychologists.

Watching a Luigi say to another Luigi “you’re breaking up with me? I thought you were proposing” would make anyone laugh.

There are many grand moments in community theater life that bring joy, passion, and excitement. However, every so often, it’s nice to enjoy just a simple laugh at a pair of matching costumes.
